Derby Section Index

Derby has two major hospital sites and the University of Nottingham has a presence at each of them. The School of Nursing has a pre registration centre and post registration centre at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site. While over at the Derby City General Hospital, the University has a Medical School and a base for the Academic Division of Midwifery. There are over 600 University of Nottingham students based in Derby in addition to the visiting students from other University of Nottingham centres doing placements in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (DRI)

The School of Nursing’s Derby centre is located here and occupies two buildings; the main building is well within the hospital grounds and this is where all the pre-registration courses are delivered most of the facilities are located here as well. The second building (Melbourne House) is located just outside the grounds on Osmaston Road and this is where the post registration course are delivered.

Common room
The student common room (or Coffee Lounge as it’s called locally) is located on the ground floor of the main building and is available to all university of Nottingham students. Access to cold water and vending machines is available here. The best use of space is used to fit in as many chairs in as possible, although getting a seat at lunch times can sometimes prove difficult.




Students’ Union on-site services
A number of Students’ Union services are available directly on site to all University of Nottingham students. These services are kindly provided via the School of Nursing Centre Administrator (Joanna East) and the Deputy Centre Administrator (Julia Varney), call 01332 347 141 ext 2459 or ask at the School of Nursing reception desk for more information.

Students’ Union Associations: SUNAMA
The Students’ Union has an associated body at this site called SUNAMA (Students’ Union Nursing & Midwifery Association). SUNAMA is funded, trained and supported by the Students’ Union

 

Derby City General Hospital


The University of Nottingham’s Graduate Entry Medicine course (GEM), is based at this site. The Medical School is housed in its modern purpose built centre opposite the children’s ward. The Academic Division of Midwifery’s Derby Centre is located inside the main hospital building. The Derby City General Hospital site is a work in progress with construction work on-going, because of this the Academic Division of Midwifery will be relocated a number of times over the next 2 years.



 

 

 



Common room

There is no dedicated Student Common Room in the Medical School or in the Academic Division of Midwifery. Although there is a café area on the ground floor of the Medical School which isrun by Café Direct. They offer a range of snacks as well as a selection of hot and cold drinks. There is also a pool table available for use at the centre which is located in the area at the bottom of the main corridor on the ground floor.

The following Students’ Union services are kindly provided via the Medical School Course Office at the reception on the second floor of the school.

The Students’ Union associated body for the medical school is called GEM Soc (Graduate Entry Medicine Society). GEM Soc is funded, trained and supported by the Students Union. To find out more information about GEM Soc and the services they provide for students

Other Students’ Union services
The £50 loan scheme is available from the School of Nursing at the DRI site.

Students’ Union notice board locations The Students’ Union has a notice board at the Academic Division of Midwifery and another can be found at the Medical school near the bottom of the centres main stairs along the corridor that leads to the University Library.
