Mental Health Awareness Camapign
Nutter. Psycho. Schizo. Crazy. Mental. Loopy.
One in four people will experience mental health problems in a year, so chances are you know someone who is going through something right now.
Unfortunately though, there is loads of shame and fear surrounding mental health – so many people are ashamed to admit they have mental health difficulties, and because of that don’t seek the help they need. Would you be happy if someone described you like using the words above?
We can change this by stopping the stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental health – read on and find out more on mental health issues.
What are the common mental health problems?
‘Mental health problems’ covers such a wide range of experiences, from sadness, grief or stress caused by everyday life, to more long term illnesses such as depression where people can get lost with reality. These problems are more common than you’d think, with 1 in 4 people being affected by mental health issues each year. Problems can range from mild to severe – everyone is unique.
If an issue starts to interfere with the daily living of your life and your ability to cope and function, then it is time to talk to someone about it and look for help.
There are so many places that you can turn to for help – you are not alone, and most of all, you do not need to feel scared or ashamed of looking for help.

Events - To coincide with the mental health awareness campaign that the Welfare Committee are running this year (2007) – we have organised two events:
Eating Difficulties Workshop:
Wednesday 2nd May, 12 noon – 1pm, Portland Building Training Room.
This workshop has been designed to give you some information about the different types of eating disorders, as well as how to support someone with an eating disorder – and information about sources of help and guidance about how to seek treatment.
If you are worried about one of your friends, or family member or you think you might have an eating disorder – please come along. This session is not a form of group therapy, and we are not trained counsellors, but we hope that it will be useful to people who are worried about others or themselves. You will not have to talk about personal experiences (although you can if you wish), and you will not have to explain why you have come.
There is no advance sign up – please just drop by on Wednesday. The workshop will be in the Training Room in the Portland Building – which is near to the Print Shop on A floor. For any more information, please contact Helen (Welfare Officer) on suwelfare@nottingham.ac.uk

Massage Session: Anxiety relief
Thursday 3rd May, 7.30pm – 9pm, Portland Building C20 Cost: £3
This session is run in conjunction with Massage Soc, and aims to teach participants the art of self massage. Perfect for dealing with anxiety and stress – and great for any pre-exam nerves!
Please come to Student Activities (in the Portland Building) to sign up for your place on this course. This costs only £3 – and we hope it teaches you ways of staying relaxed… And as participants practise on each other, you should also end the evening feeling nice and calm!
Stress and anxiety is there for all of us - whether we are worried about paying bills, getting essays in on time, revising for exams, worrying about friends and family, or just making sure that you make it to your lecture on time – it is part of our everyday lives.
Some stress can be good for us though: Stress can help you perform, make sure that you meet that deadline. At some times though, stress can take over your life and become too much to cope with.
