Societies
Resources available for your use
The Students Union has many resources which are available for you to use for the benefit of your society. Below is some information about what we have, where you can find them, and how much they cost (if anything!).
- TV, Video and DVD player:
Student Activities own a TV, Video and DVD player, which is available to all Societies to hire for use within the Students' Union.
- Projector:
Societies has recently purchased a projector for your use. This can be connected to a computer/laptop or standard video equipment, and can be hired for use within the Students' Union.
- PA Equipment:
Societies has also recently purchased some PA equipment. This includes an Amp, 2 Speakers, 2 speaker stands, 2 microphones and 2 microphone stands. If you have any events that you are putting on, such as guest speakers, or need them for a band practice, these are ideal!
- Badge Maker:
As of November '06 we have a badge maker! This is the machine itself and a glass circle cutter. The badge maker can be hired out form reception for £10 a day or £15 for three days. If you would like to purchase the badge or keyring components then please speak to Laurie in Student Activities.

- Walkie-talkies:
The Students' Union owns some walkie-talkies. They are used mainly for specific Students' Union events but are available for hire to Societies. They have a range of about 3 kilometres outside or 300 metres indoors.
- Megaphone:
The Students' Union also owns a megaphone which is available to hire.
- First aid kits:
Comprehensive first aid kits can be borrowed for one-off events or to supplement your organisations'' kits for larger scale events.
- Sundries:
Items such as hazard warning tape, fire blankets & gaffer tape can be borrowed for one-off events.
- Camping equipment:
Student Activities owns several tents & cooking stoves. These are available for hire from Student Activities.
Other Resources Available
- Faxing:
The fax machine in Students' Union Reception is available for sending & receiving faxes. The number is 0115 9351101. The cost per page for sending is £1.00 within the UK, £1.50 within the EU, America & Canada & £2.00 anywhere else. The staff will send the fax for you. Received faxes will be put in your pigeonhole.
- Food and Drink:
Drinks can be ordered through the Ark Bar, using a Students Union order form available from the Treasury. Food can be ordered from Nottingham Hospitality (http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nh/staff/hospitality).
- Makro Card:
Makro is a cash and carry store on the Dunkirk industrial estate next to Showcase Cinemas. It offers cheap items in bulk so if you are buying for a social it's probably the best place to go. Makro card application forms are available from the Admin Department on the Portland Building ground floor.
- Minibus:
A self drive minibus is available to Societies. The driver(s) of the minibus must be a Union registered minibus driver (ask at reception how to do this). Book a minibus at Students' Union Reception, check the availability or just get a quote. If a minibus is available, a booking form will then need to completed. Confirmation of your booking will then be put in your pigeon hole, subject to sufficient funds being in your account in the Treasury department. If your trip is outside of the Nottingham area, a Trip Registration Form & Participant List will then be given to you & will need to be filled in within the given timescale. Minibuses cannot be driven outside of the UK. Bookings can be taken for:-
Day booking: 2 weeks before required date
Weekend booking: 4 weeks before required date
7 Days: 6 weeks before required date
- Photocopying:
A small amount of Photocopying is available in Student Activities. If more than 20 copies are needed we request you use the Students' Union print shop. - Pigeon Holes:
Societies are allocated a pigeonhole in Students Activities Department. Any external/internal mail & messages will be left in your pigeonhole. Checking regularly & replying promptly to messages may help boost your membership.
- Storage:
There is a Societies storeroom space in the Portland Building. You need to mark all of your property with the society name & contact the Societies Officer who will log all the equipment that you have. An inventory form will need to be completed otherwise none of your equipment will be insured! No personal equipment is allowed to be stored. - Telephone:
There are telephones available for committee use in Student Activities. If you wish to use these, please ask at Student Activities Reception. The phones are only available for use during normal office hours (10am - 5pm).
- Workspace:
As well as telephones, the Student Activities workspace has a number of computers for committee use. Please feel free to come in and use them!
