Students' Union Reception - Transport

Who can book transport
We can only book transport for affiliated clubs and societies

We can book the following transport for you:
SU Minibus - 1x15 seater minibus, no roofrack/towbar
Self drive minibuses - 15 seaters, we do deal with a company who have minibuses with roofracks (see note below for criteria)
Transit vans - normal, long-wheel based vans (see note below for criteria)
Cars - (see note below for criteria)
Minibuses with drivers - 16 seaters
Coaches - 49 and 75 seaters

  • Union Minibus and External minibuses can only be booked if you have a Union registered minibus driver,
  • If you don't have a driver who is registered with us, if they are over 25 and have been driving for 2 years, then it is possible to book a minibus for you as the hire will go on the companies insurance, otherwise I am afraid no company will let you hire independantly if you are under 25
  • Minibus drivers need to re-register every academic year, all we need is a copy of your driving licence (both parts) and fill in a driver registration form. If you have graduated from Uni and would still like to drive for a club/society, then you will need to become an Associate Member of the SU so that you are insured, a form for this can be downloaded from the main reception web page
  • Transit vans (normal, long-wheel based, 4m sprinters) - you have to be over 21 years old, have had a driving licence for 2+ years as the hire is on the hire companies insurance. There is usually a £100 excess
  • Cars (small cars-people carriers) - you have to be over 21 years old to drive a small car (ie Peugeot 306) and usually over 25 to drive anything larger. You need to have had a driving licence for 2+ years as the hire is on the hire companies insurance. You will also have to produce on collection as well as your driving licence (both parts), 2 other forms of ID 1 being some other form of id and the other a household bill. A deposit is usually needed to be left of £250 (payable by debit/credit card) but this will be given back to you when the vehicle is returned undamaged

How to become a minibus driver
If you are not a registered driver, please click here to see if you fulfil the criteria to become a driver. If you do fulfil the requirements, then please come along to the SU Reception for further details as you will need to attend a theory session and a practical assessment, this will take a full day (9.15am-4pm). If you pass this assessment, then you will get a MiDAS Certificate, which is a recognised driving assessment and the certificate is valid for 4 years

The cost is £25, which needs to be paid upon booking your assessment, a receipt can be issued so you can claim this back through your club/society

Assessment dates for October-December 2007: 29 Nov, 6 Dec and 13 Dec

Minibus Insurance
With the Union and External minibus, there is an excess of up to £350 dependant on the age of the driver. £75 excess for a windscreen. We cannot claim for loss of hire, so if the minibus if off the road for sometime this will be a cost to the club/society and the club/society will also have to pay for any VAT on any repairs as we are VAT registered
